Abstract

This research explores the concept of adaptive design for office furniture as an innovative approach that combines technology and practical functionality to create flexible solutions that adapt to users' needs and changing environments. With the shift toward hybrid work and a focus on sustainability, adaptive design is essential for enhancing functional health and reducing environmental impact. The research aims to uncover how this approach can improve the productivity and quality of office furniture by analyzing models from leading companies such as Steelcase, which developed the Jestor arm and back support chairs. The main focus is on five areas of ergonomic adaptation: designing adjustable chairs and tables to support healthy postures and reduce muscle strain, supported by posture monitoring technology; adapting to limited spaces: using multifunctional or foldable furniture, such as Murphy tables, to maximize the use of small spaces; technological adaptation: incorporating smart technology (such as the Internet of Things and artificial intelligence) into furniture, such as interactive displays and smart lighting systems; environmental sustainability: using recycled materials and designing recyclable products, such as the Herman Miller Aeron chair, which is made from 94% recyclable materials; and aesthetic and cultural diversity: incorporating cultural elements such as Islamic motifs or feng shui principles to promote belonging and creativity.
