Abstract

The research addressed the topic of dramatic treatment of historical events in television drama, as an artistic endeavor that intersects with historical documents within a narrative and visual vision based on interpretation and explanation. Screenwriter Hamed Al-Maliki was chosen as the model for analysis, given his works' treatment of historical investigation and artistic construction, and the multiple narrative visions they reflect that employ and reproduce the event dramatically through the tools of television imagery.

The research sought to demonstrate how to transform historical events from an archival document into an effective dramatic vision, and to deconstruct the levels of interaction between the elements of narrative structure and historical reference. The research consisted of five chapters. The first addressed the methodological framework, including the research problem, objectives, significance, and limitations. The second chapter discussed the theoretical framework, divided into three sections: narrative patterns in drama; the historical document and its transformation into text; and visual treatment in terms of the formation of the dramatic image.  The third chapter covers the methodological procedures, including a description of the sample, methodology, and analytical tool. The fourth chapter includes an analysis of three dramatic models by Hamid Al-Maliki: Sara Khatoun, Marouf Al-Rusafi, and Abu Tabar, deconstructing the narrative and visual structure of each work. Finally, the research reached several conclusions, the most notable of which are: The symbolic and suggestive use of characters and dialogue within the three works represents a mechanism for deciphering the unspoken in political history. Thus, symbols become a tool for deconstructing authority and exposing the ideological systems hidden behind official documents
