Abstract

The current research explores the technical and functional use of the digital alternative represented by the computer as an alternative to the traditional dimmer in contemporary theatrical lighting design. It demonstrates its essential role in achieving high-precision visual control, relying on advanced digital processing capabilities. It also offers technical capabilities that open up broad creative horizons in shaping theatrical space. This approach stems from the flexibility offered by the computer, with its hardware and software components, in terms of lighting management and a variety of lighting patterns. This provides utilitarian value at both the material and artistic levels, making it a contemporary option that aligns with the developments and growing demands of modern theatrical performance. Accordingly, the research title, "The Digital Alternative to Dimmers in Contemporary Theatrical Lighting - An Applied Study," was chosen as a scientific attempt to gain a deeper understanding of the harmony between technology and theatrical creativity. The researcher presented his research in four chapters:

  1. Chapter One: The methodological framework, which defined the research problem, its importance, and the need for it, as well as its objective, which is how to use the computer as a digital alternative to the traditional dimmer in contemporary theatrical lighting. It also outlined the research's boundaries and defined terminology procedurally.
  2. Chapter Two: The theoretical framework and previous studies. The theoretical framework is divided into three sections:

Section One: Theoretical foundations of digital technology in theater.

Section Two: Digital alternatives to the traditional dimmer in theatrical lighting.

Section Three: The operation of the digital alternative to the dimmer in contemporary theatrical lighting.

Chapter Three: The research procedures, and the researcher examined his research sample using the play "Happy Life."

Chapter Four included the results, conclusions, recommendations, and proposals.

The researcher concluded his research with a number of results and conclusions.

The most important results:

  1. 1. The digital dimmer, when combined with contemporary lighting, demonstrated a clear ability to completely replace the traditional system.
  2. 2. The digital dimmer contributed to reducing electrical power consumption to near-zero levels, which helped reduce operational risk.

Key Conclusions:

  1. 1. Thanks to the integration of hardware and software components, the digital alternative has a high capacity to manage the theatrical space as a parallel virtual environment that accepts the preparation, design, distribution, and pre-adjustment of the lighting plan.

2.                 The digital dimmer provides a high level of security in the theatrical environment by using a single cable (HDMI) to transmit optical data, reducing the risk of tangling and traditional electrical wiring that requires multiple electrical cables.
