Abstract

The current study focuses on examining the body in contemporary theatre as a material entity and on the problem of its subjugation through collective memory and inherited traditions. This subjugation has transformed the body into a limited-function entity bound by social and religious references, leading to the absence of its active presence within the theatrical space. Modern studies emphasize that the body is not merely a biological presence but a bearer of meaning and thought capable of shaping its own history. Hence, calls have emerged to liberate it from the authority of social and religious heritage and to redirect its function so that it becomes a producer of meaning and identity, not merely a reflection of collective memory, but rather a body that creates its own memory.
