Abstract

Political cinema is grounded in an aesthetic and cognitive awareness that elevates place into an active semantic element rather than merely a narrative backdrop or visual frame for events. In many of these films, place is deliberately reconstructed and distorted—not to conceal meaning or obscure it, but to dismantle its apparent obviousness, unsettle the viewer, and prompt a rethinking of the symbolic, social, and political structures that produce and reproduce it, especially within contexts of oppression, war, displacement, and class division. In cinematic discourse, place is not reduced to a static geographical space; rather, according to certain philosophical approaches, it is a system of interrelated relationships and phenomena in which functions, bodies, and events intersect within a particular logic that may diverge from the familiar logic of everyday experience. Thus, in political cinema, place becomes a latent text carrying dual codes of interpretation and concealment simultaneously. It forms the underlying structure through which power is deconstructed, memory is reclaimed, and the struggle over meaning and existence is re-enacted.
