Abstract

This study tracks images of living beings in Western painting, exploring the space between imagination and composition. It comprises four chapters. In the first chapter, the researcher presents the research problem, founded on the question: “How are living beings depicted in Western painting between imagination and composition?” The aim is to identify the images of living beings in Western painting within the same frame. The introduction covers the significance, necessity, and limitations of the study, including definitions of terms mentioned in the title.

The second chapter offers the theoretical framework, organized into three sections. The first section discusses imagination as a philosophical concept. The second addresses the notion of imagined and composite beings in ancient civilizations. The third examines construction and assembly in contemporary Western art. The second chapter culminates in a set of research indicators the researcher uses to develop an analytic framework, guiding the study’s progression into the third chapter. Six artworks were selected after defining the research population and justify sampling choices, in addition to specifying the methodological tool employed for analysis.

The fourth chapter presents the results derived from analyzing sample models and the corresponding conclusions. Notable findings include:

1) these beings highlight irrational and grotesque aspects within artworks, making them effective devices for expressing psychological and existential conflicts, particularly in surrealist and romantic movements;

2) artists borrow these beings to critique reality, imbuing works with satirical tones that reveal contradictions.
