يعد اسلوب الشريف محيي الدين حيدر في العزف على آلة العود والقواعد والتقاليد الادائية، التي ثبتها، من أهم الأسس التي أسهمت في حفظ وبلورة النتاج الموسيقي الآلي العراقي، وجعله نتاجا علميا له قيمته الفنية والفكرية، واسلوبا فنيا ينهل منه الشرق والغرب على حد سواء.
وقد عمل العديد من عازفي العود من أجيال ما بعد تلامذة الشريف الاوائل على ابتكار الحان متنوعة وبمختلف الأشكال والقوالب الموسيقية الآلية، بغية إيجاد مساحات جديدة ومختلفة للتعبير من خلالها، ما يدفع للتساؤل حول الكيفية، أو الطريقة، أو النمط، أو النوع، الذي ينتمي اليه هؤلاء العازفين، وهذا البحث يهتم بدراسة هذا الموضوع.
وتكمن أهمية البحث في أنه يهتم بدراسة طرائق التلحين الموسيقي العربي، ويعزز من جانب تطوير التلحين والكتابة الموسيقية لآلة العود وغيرها من الآلات.
لقد تناول البحث في إطاره النظري ثلاثة المواضيع هي بالترتيب: (مفهوم التأليف والتلحين الموسيقي)، (سمات الموسيقى الآلية العربية)، و(آلة العود في الموسيقى العراقية المعاصرة).
كما درس هذا البحث عينات اختيرت بالطريقة القصدية، مثلت مجتمع عازفي العود العراقيين، والذي حدد بـ(22 عازفا)، وبعد التحليل بمعيار صمم لهذا الغرض، خلص البحث الى مجموعة من النتائج والاستنتاجات أهمها، أن غالبية عازفي العود في العراق يتملكون ملكات في التأليف والابتكار الموسيقي على وفق التلحين الآلي العربي الذي يتعامل مع عناصر موسيقية محددة هي اللحن، والايقاع، والشكل، والأداء، وليس على وفق قواعد ونظم وضوابط التأليف العالمية التي تتعامل مع جميع العناصر الموسيقية، إذ التزمت طرائقهم ولم تخرج عما هو متداول في الموسيقى والغناء العراقي والعربي.
