Features of modernity in the sculptures of Karim and Chadwick

Abstract

The current research addresses the phenomenon and characteristics of modernity in the works of both Iraqi sculptor Ittihad Karim and British sculptor Chadwick. Their works were characterized by modernist characteristics, creating a new artistic phenomenon in their sculpture.                                                    

The research consists of an introduction in which the researcher discusses: Fine art in the artistic stages that preceded the modern era worked to shackle the artist's creativity with the constraints of mastering conformity in imitating the formal requirements of the environment to satisfy the desires of the collective. Meanwhile, the visual artist in the modern era was keen to direct his work inward to satisfy his emotional and psychological concerns, utilizing his wealth of knowledge and culture to direct his visual art. The researcher then identified the boundaries of the research and defined the terms. The researcher then addressed the concept of modernity and its applications in artistic formation, as well as the modernist movement in Iraqi sculpture. This resulted in theoretical indicators as a measure of the research procedures, for which the researcher identified the artists Ittihad Karim and Chadwick. The researcher concluded with a set of results and conclusions, and finally, a confirmation of the research references and sources.
