Silence in Contemporary Sculpture

This research examines the theme of silence in contemporary sculpture, considering it a significant concept that has gained importance due to its deep connection with human experience and its extension into various artistic fields. The study seeks to answer the central question: How does silence function as a contemporary concept in contemporary sculpture? The research highlights its importance as a cognitive contribution for art students and those interested in contemporary art. Its main objective is to identify the concept of silence and clarify how it operates within contemporary sculptural works. The research is limited to sculptures produced between 2010 and 2019, with key terms defined to support conceptual clarity.
The theoretical framework of the study is divided into two main sections. The first explores the concept of silence from a cognitive and philosophical perspective, emphasizing its abstract and implicit nature. The second section examines how silence is employed in contemporary art practices, particularly sculpture, as a visual and expressive strategy. This chapter concludes by identifying a set of theoretical indicators that guide the analysis of the selected samples.
Methodologically, the study adopts a descriptive-analytical approach. The research community consists of 30 contemporary sculptural works accessed through online sources. From this community, a purposeful sample of five sculptures was selected for in-depth analysis. The researcher relied on observation and the previously identified theoretical indicators to describe and interpret the selected works.
The study concludes that silence in contemporary sculpture functions as a visual language that creates a space of stillness, inviting contemplation and emotional engagement. It is an implicit, abstract form of communication realized through ideas rather than direct expression. Ultimately, silence establishes a profound communicative relationship between the sculptural work and the viewer through reflection, contemplation, and inference
